recently changed (upgraded) desktop computer. My HP 3830 All-in-One printer worked fine (Ethernet connected) but I cannot create a shortcut to the scanner. Downloaded HP scan but it says it cannot locate my scanner?

Hi @Bluemagic95,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP 3830 All-in-One scanner isn’t recognized on your new desktop, even though printing works fine over Ethernet. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Check network connection
– Ensure your desktop is on the same network as the HP 3830.
– Confirm the printer’s Ethernet connection is active and the IP address hasn’t changed.

Verify the printer is fully online
– On the printer control panel, check that the Wi-Fi or Ethernet light is solid.
– Print a network configuration page to confirm the IP address.

Use the latest HP Smart / HP Scan software
– Download the most recent HP Smart or HP Scan software from the HP website for your operating system.
– Install it after disconnecting any previous versions.

Add the scanner manually via IP address
– Open HP Scan → Select “Add a new scanner” → Enter the printer’s IP address from the network configuration page.
– This often resolves recognition issues on new computers.

Check firewall or antivirus settings
– Windows firewall or third-party antivirus may block the scanner discovery.
– Temporarily disable them and try scanning again.

Test using HP Smart app
– Open HP Smart → Add your HP 3830 by IP or automatic search → Test scanning from the app.
– If successful, you can create a desktop shortcut for quick scanning.

Restart devices
– Power cycle the printer and the desktop.
– After restarting, open HP Scan or HP Smart and check if the scanner is detected.

I hope this helps.
