Hi @vellste ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the fax component of your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 printer is damaged and you're unable to fax, you might need to troubleshoot or repair the fax functionality.

Here's a step-by-step guide to help you address the issue:

  • Verify the Damage: Ensure that the fax component is indeed damaged by checking for any visible signs of damage or by running diagnostics provided by HP.
  • Restart the Printer: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary glitches. Turn off the printer, wait for a few minutes, and then turn it back on.
  • Update Printer Drivers: Make sure that your printer drivers are up to date. You can download the latest drivers from the HP website specifically for your model and install them on your Windows 10 system. Update the firmware on an HP printer
  • Check Fax Settings: Verify that the fax settings on your printer are correctly configured. Ensure that the necessary fax settings such as fax number, country/region code, and other relevant settings are set correctly.
  • Test Fax Line: Ensure that the telephone line connected to your printer for faxing is functioning correctly. You can test this by connecting a telephone handset to the same line and checking for a dial tone.
  • Reset the Printer: Resetting the printer to its default settings might help resolve any software-related issues. Refer to the printer's manual for instructions on how to perform a factory reset.
  • Alternative Fax Solutions: While waiting for repairs or if faxing is not critical, consider alternative methods for faxing such as using online fax services or scanning and emailing documents instead.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
