Product: HP ENVY Photo 7858 All-in-One Printer

my computer will not talk to my HP printer.  HP Smart says the printer is "ready".  HP Doctor says that devise does not communicate with the printer.  On one HP site I learned that a new driver needs to be added.  I downloaded it twice and, after going through hoops, I get a report that something happened and the driver was not installed.  My warranty just ran out before this new driver came out. 

Is there an easy solution. 

I think this has happened in the past and I just bought a new printer.  If I elect to do that, I will choose a different company and select a program that calls for continued maintenance of the product (for a fee, of course).
