Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

Additional Information

General information based on having some kind of supported HP printer, has a scan option, and can be used with an appropriate application or software that works with the printer's connection to your network (for example, Wireless / Wired / Wi-Fi Direct)

Standard "in-House" Scan applications -- for example, Windows Fax and Scan -- provide limited types of scan options.  Examples of supported Scan File Types:  TIF, BMP, JPG, PNG

Example - Windows Fax and Scan

HP Scan and Capture (soon to be retired) supports photos and PDF scan formats.  Nice app - too bad it will be soon unavailable.

Example - HP Scan and Capture (FYI only)

If the printer is new enough, if the Operating System / version is supported, HP Smart supports Scan operations for Photos / Images and PDF formats.  HP Smart for Windows, if you can install it on your computer for your printer, is increasingly clever and packed with features.  Caveat:  HP Smart Windows / HP Smart Mobile does not understand the concept of Defaults -- HP Smart does understand and support image / document scanning.

Example - HP Smart - Windows - Menu - Document Scan options

If the printer is new enough, if the Operating System / version is supported, HP Scan -- software that is part of the Full Feature Software -- supports scanning for Photos / Images and PDF formats.

If the printer is new enough, if the Operating System / version is supported, a few printers support a newer and newly formatted scan software:  HP Universal Scan Software.  HP Universal Scan Software supports scan operations for Photos / Images and PDF formats.

 Third Party Software

NAPS2 – “Not Another PDF Scanner” (Free – Donations gladly accepted by the NAPS2 organization)

  • Download-Save-Install >  NAPS2
  • Not another PDF Scanner – free program scans PDF files and image(s) as .jpeg or PDF file(s).
  • Not always simple “Plug and Play”, nonetheless, this free software is powerful and configurable.
  • NAPS2 might require that the full driver printer software is installed.
