MY hp-17 all-in-one laptop will not fax - initial message states "busy...no response".  After a power surge which damaged my AC adapter,  I connected a new compatible adapter.  Now the message reads "poor connection".

@HR_mfcl2700dw, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M2700 series (likely MFP M2700dw) is having issues with faxing, particularly after the power surge that also affected your HP 17 all-in-one laptop. Let's go step by step to troubleshoot this:

Understanding the Messages

  1. "Busy... no response" – This usually means the printer attempted to fax, but the receiving end was busy or there was no answer.
  2. "Poor connection" – This is typically a sign of interference or line quality issues on the phone/fax line.

After a power surge, it's very possible that either:

  • The fax modem inside the printer got damaged.
  • The phone line connection (jack, cable, splitter, or wall socket) is faulty or now has signal degradation.
  • Line settings on the printer may have been reset.

Troubleshooting Steps

Check Phone Line Setup

  • Make sure the phone line is plugged into the correct port on the printer (usually labeled "Line" not "Ext").
  • If you're using a DSL or VoIP line, use a DSL filter or splitter.
  • Try connecting the printer directly to the wall jack, without any splitters or surge protectors in between.
  • Try using a different phone cable.

Test the Phone Line

  • Plug a regular landline phone into the same wall jack.
  • Try dialing the fax number manually — can you hear a dial tone and fax tones?
  • If there's no dial tone or static, the problem is with the phone line, not the printer.

Power Cycle the Printer

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug it for 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and try faxing again.

Fax Settings on the Printer

On the printer control panel or Embedded Web Server:

  • Go to Fax Setup > Fax Settings > Basic Settings:
    • Set Dial Type: Tone or Pulse (usually Tone).
    • Set Fax Speed to Medium or Slow (faster speeds fail on bad lines).
    • Disable Error Correction Mode (ECM) temporarily to see if it helps.
    • If using VoIP, set Fax Speed to Slow and enable ECM.

Printer Self-Test

  • On the printer, print a Fax Test Report:
    • This is usually under Fax > Setup > Tools > Fax Test.
    • It will tell you if the phone line is working and properly connected.

>Firmware Update: If possible, connect the printer via USB or Wi-Fi to a PC and check for firmware updates via HP Smart or the HP Support site

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi,

While you mention mcfl2700dw your title, this refers to a Brother's MFP device and not to an HP device:

https://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadtop.aspx?c=eu_ot&lang=en&prod=mfcl2700dw_us_eu_as

As you describe faxing from the computer on your details, I suggest trying to fax from the device itself first and check if you may see any difference then.

other than that, I would suggest trying a new phone cable and check if that may make any difference, otherwise try checking with your printer manufacturer or with your phone service provider on a such, as the description seems to indicate a phone line quality issue.

Best of luck,

Shlomi
