HP Recommended
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Good day. I currently am using an HP Officejet 6500a E709a and I understand the scanner part of the printer that was affiliated with this printer is no longer exists.  But I still should be able to use the scanner portion of the printer.  When I hit "start scan" on the printer I get a message stating for troubleshooting refer to device documentation.  I don't have any documentation for this printer to refer to.  How is it I can print and fax, but not able to scan?

I have gone into my control panel, device & printer and clicked on the option troubleshooting... states it has been moved and that tool is retired.  So troubleshooting is not an option.  I hit Sart scan option from the devices and printer section and nothing is scanning.  Ive tried scan from scanner to printer and nothing.  I don't understand why I am not able to scan from the official printer.  Assistance is greatly appreciated

Hello @NLFich,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Unfortunately, your printer is too old.
But maybe this software will help you.

Try this Solution:

  1. Download only this file: https://ftp.hp.com/pub/scanners/HPScanExt/HPScanExt.msi
  2. Close all programs

Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo > in folder Downloads double-click on the msi.

OPTIONAL:

Add HP Scan Extended shortcut to Taskbar / Send to Desktop / Pin to Start
    • Open File Explorer > Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\HP\HP Scan Extended\bin
    • Right-Click on "HPScan.exe" > Select Pin to Taskbar / Send to Desktop / Pin to Start

I hope this helps.

Kind Regards
