@marlene112, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

I understand your HP OfficeJet 4650 All-in-One Printer is not scanning from the glass, even though it should support that functionality. Let’s walk through some steps to resolve this issue.

Check Basic Functionality

  • Make sure the printer is powered on and connected to your computer via USB or Wi-Fi.
  • Lift the scanner lid and ensure the glass is clean and free of dust or smudges.
  • Place the document face down on the scanner glass, aligned with the corner guides.

Use HP Scan Software

If you haven’t already, install the full-feature HP software for your printer: Official HP® Support

After installation, open HP Scan from your computer:

  • On Windows: Search for HP Scan in the Start menu.
  • On macOS: Use HP Easy Scan (available via the HP software or App Store).

Try Scanning from HP Smart App

Download the HP Smart app: HP Smart

Open the app and:

  • Click Scan > Scanner Glass
  • Choose your scan settings and click Scan

Reset the Printer

  • Unplug the printer while it’s powered on.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on. This can resolve temporary glitches.

Check for Firmware Updates

  • Go to the printer’s control panel:
    • Tap Setup > Printer Maintenance > Update Printer
    • Or update via HP Smart app under Settings > Advanced Settings

Try Windows Fax and Scan (Windows only)

  • Open Windows Fax and Scan from the Start menu.
  • Click New Scan, select your printer, and choose Flatbed as the source.

If the Issue Persists

  • Try scanning from the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) to check if the issue is isolated to the glass.
  • If scanning from ADF works but glass doesn’t, it could be a hardware issue with the scanner lamp or sensor.

I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.

Wishing you a smooth and hassle-free experience ahead!
