Ubuntu LTS

My hp psc 2500 photosmart all in one fails to scan a second document.

The scans are started from a Linux computer.

The first scan is ok but the second scan fails to start.

Is this a hardware problem and how can I fix it?

Hi @vhelmont,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP PSC 2500 Photosmart all-in-one printer can successfully scan the first document but fails on subsequent scans, here are some troubleshooting steps you can take to identify and potentially resolve the issue:

1. Check for Software Conflicts

  • Ensure that there are no conflicts with the scanning software you're using on your Linux system. If you're using a specific scanning application (like XSane or Simple Scan), try switching to a different one to see if the issue persists.

2. Update or Reinstall Scanning Software

  • Make sure the scanning application is up to date. If not, update it or reinstall it to ensure all necessary components are functioning correctly.

3. Restart the Printer and Computer

  • Sometimes a simple restart can help:
    1. Turn off the printer and unplug it for about 30 seconds.
    2. Restart your computer.
    3. Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

4. Check Printer Connection

  • If you’re using a USB connection, try a different USB port or cable. If it’s a network connection, ensure that your printer is still connected to the network and has a stable connection.

5. Use a Different File Format

  • Try changing the output format for the scans. If the first scan is saved in one format (like JPEG), try saving the second scan in a different format (like PNG or PDF) to see if that makes a difference.

6. Inspect Scanner Components

  • Check the scanner for any physical obstructions or issues, such as:
    • A dirty scanner glass that could affect scanning.
    • Ensure that there’s no dust or debris on the scanner's components.

7. Reset Printer Settings

  • If possible, reset the printer settings to factory defaults through the printer’s control panel.

8. Scan from the Control Panel (if available)

  • If your printer has a built-in option to scan directly from its control panel, try using that instead of your computer to see if the problem persists.

9. Check for Firmware Updates

  • Look for any firmware updates for your printer on the HP support site. Updated firmware can sometimes resolve compatibility and functionality issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hello Rachel571

Sorry for the late reply.

I think I have a clue about the source of the problem.

My setup is as follows:

  • One HP PSC 2500 Photosmart all-in-one printer connected to my internal LAN network.
  • One Ubuntu 20.04 LTS connected to my internal LAN network and CUPS is used to configure the HP PSC 2500 Photosmart all-in-one printer directly.
  • One Ubuntu 22.04 LTS connected to my internal LAN network and CUPS is used to configure the HP PSC 2500 Photosmart all-in-one printer directly.
  • VueScan is used on both pc's to perform scan operations.

I guess by directly configuring the HP PSC 2500 Photosmart all-in-one printer in CUPS on both pc's,  the printer is very busy by answering CUPS request from both pc's even when no printing is done.

When VueScan tries to contact the printer it frequently finds it busy and can't start.

I guess I have to directly configure the printer in CUPS on one pc and allow it to be shared over the network.

On the other pc I have to configure CUPS to use the shared printer instead of directly configuring it.

This is an assumption, more testing is needed.

Regards,

Vhelmont
