If your HP Envy 4500 is printing fine but won't scan, here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot the issue.

 

Restart the Printer and Computer

  • Turn off your HP Envy 4500 printer and your computer.
  • Disconnect the printer's power cable for about 30 seconds and reconnect it.
  • Restart your computer, then turn the printer back on.

Check the Scanner Software

  • Ensure you have the latest version of HP Scan or HP Smart software installed.
    • You can download the latest drivers and software from the HP Support Website.
    • Reinstall the software if it’s already installed, as it might be corrupted.

Use HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows Only)

  • Download and run HP Print and Scan Doctor, a free tool from HP that can fix scanning issues automatically.

Check Scanner Settings

  • Open the HP software on your computer.
  • Go to Scan Settings and check that the correct device is selected as the scanner.
  • Test the scan feature to ensure it's properly configured.

Run a Scan from the Control Panel

  • Try scanning from the printer’s control panel. If it fails, there may be a hardware issue.
    • Press the Scan button on the printer to initiate a scan.
    • Follow any prompts on the screen to select scan options.

Check Firewall Settings

  • Sometimes, firewalls can block the communication between your computer and the printer. Disable your firewall temporarily to see if this resolves the issue.

Update Firmware

  • Go to HP Support and check if there is a firmware update available for your HP Envy 4500.

Check for Windows Scan Feature

  • On Windows, try using the Windows Fax and Scan feature:
    • Open Start → type Windows Fax and Scan → press Enter.
    • Try scanning a document to see if the issue persists.

Try Scanning from Another Device

  • If possible, try scanning from another device (like a phone or tablet) using the HP Smart app to see if the problem is device-specific.
