Hi @kim1864

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I'm really sorry you're facing this—it’s genuinely frustrating when your printer connects seamlessly but the scanner refuses to show up, especially when everything worked before. This kind of issue typically points to a driver mismatch, incomplete installation, or missing scan utility, especially after switching to a new PC.

Let’s walk through a focused recovery path to help restore full scan functionality:

Step-by-Step Fix for Scanner Not Recognized on New HP Desktop

1. Install the Full Feature Software

Your printer may have installed with basic print drivers only.

  • Visit the official support page for your printer model:
    HP Printer Drivers & Software
  • Enter your printer’s exact model (e.g., HP DeskJet, ENVY, OfficeJet)
  • Download and install the Full Feature Software and Drivers for Windows 11
  • Restart your desktop after installation

This package includes the scan utility and ensures proper device detection.

2. Use HP Smart App for Scanning

This app offers reliable scanning and bypasses older utilities.

  • Download: HP Smart for Windows
  • Open the app and click Scan
  • Choose your source (flatbed or document feeder) and save the file to your desktop

3. Check Device Manager

Ensure the scanner is listed and functioning.

  • Press Windows + X → open Device Manager
  • Expand Imaging Devices or Printers
  • Look for your printer/scanner model
    • If missing or flagged, right-click → Update driver
    • If listed, right-click → Scan for hardware changes

4.  Use HP’s Diagnose & Fix Tool (Windows)

  • In the HP Smart app, click Printer Settings > Diagnose & Fix.
  • Let it run a scan—it will automatically fix common connection issues.
You can also access this tool on HP’s support page if needed.

5. Check Windows Services

Scan functionality depends on background services.

  • Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter
  • Locate Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)
    • Right-click → Properties
    • Set Startup type to Automatic
    • Click Start if the service is stopped

I understand how disruptive this has been, and I truly hope these steps help restore full scanning capability. If you’d like help identifying your printer model or navigating the HP Smart app, I’m here to assist.
