Bought a new HP laserjet Pro MFP 4101 device. It works okay as printer. But does not send a fax. And there is also a burning smell. It is my belief this new multi-function device is defective.

Often new printers do present odd smells at first. You do not provide enough details about how you are connected and trying to fax for me to provide any feedback on that. If you feel that the device is defective and it is new as you state, contact place of purchase and have them check it out. Or go to support.hp.com and start a case as new products have a one year warranty on them.
