Hi @Kathi67,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for contacting HP. If your HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 is making a loud, scratchy noise and the automatic document feeder (ADF) is not working when trying to scan, print, or fax, it typically indicates a mechanical issue with the ADF's rollers or feed mechanism.

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting

1. Power Cycle the Printer

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from both the printer and the wall.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and power on the printer.

This can clear minor mechanical jams or sensor issues.

2. Check for Paper Jams in the ADF

  • Lift the ADF cover.
  • Look inside for any small pieces of paper, labels, or foreign objects.
  • Remove any debris gently.
  • Open the ADF input tray and inspect the rollers from both sides.

3. Clean the ADF Rollers

  • Use a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol.
  • Gently clean the ADF rollers and separator pad.
  • Allow them to dry fully before using the ADF again.

You can also use the ADF cleaning page from HP if available for your model.

4. Test the ADF

  • Place a single sheet of paper into the ADF.
  • Try a copy or scan.
  • If the noise persists and it still doesn't feed, continue below.

5. ADF Gear or Roller Failure

The scratchy noise may indicate a worn or broken gear, especially if:

  • The rollers are not moving at all
  • The ADF tries to pull paper but fails repeatedly

This would require hardware servicing or part replacement.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
