If your HP printer prints but won't scan, there could be several reasons for the issue. Here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem.

 

Restart Devices:

  • Turn off your printer, computer, and router. Wait for a few minutes and then turn them back on.

Check Connections:

  • Ensure all cables (USB, power) are securely connected.
  • If you’re using a network printer, make sure it's connected to the same network as your computer.

Update Software and Drivers:

  • Go to the HP website and check for any driver updates or firmware updates for your printer model.
  • Install the latest version of HP’s scanning software (such as HP Scan or HP Smart).

Run the HP Print and Scan Doctor:

  • Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool. This utility can diagnose and fix common issues with HP printers and scanners.

Check Scanner Settings:

  • Open the scanning software you use and ensure the correct scanner is selected.
  • Verify that the scanning settings are configured correctly.

Firewall and Antivirus:

  • Temporarily disable any firewall or antivirus software to see if they are blocking the scanning function.

Reinstall Printer Software:

  • Uninstall the printer software from your computer.
  • Download the latest software from the HP website and reinstall it.

Try a Different Application:

  • Use a different scanning application to see if the issue persists. For instance, you can try Windows Fax and Scan or a third-party scanning app.

Check for Error Messages:

  • Check the printer’s display for any error messages or codes that might indicate the problem.

Use HP Smart App:

  • If you're not already using it, download the HP Smart app. It can help with scanning and provide troubleshooting steps.
