HP LaserJet Pro MFP M227fdw

My new LaserJet MFP M227fdw simply won't print consistently - and hasn't since purchasing.  Default seemed to be Off Line, but have not been able to change this.  Have rebooted multiple times, computer, printer and router.  Status is sometime shown as off line, sometimes not.  Simple PDF print job returns error message.  Verified printer is connected to network and has password entered correctly.  Printed one page after last reboot - thought all was well.  Tried to print another page and nothing.  Have about lost all patience!  Please help if you can.  Thanks,

Hi @ReneA5,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're experiencing quite a few issues with your LaserJet MFP M227fdw printer. Based on what you've described, there are several potential causes and solutions that we can explore to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the problem.

1. Printer Status Offline or Error Messages

When a printer is showing as "Offline" or is generating error messages when you attempt to print, it's often related to communication issues between the printer and your computer or network.

Solutions:

Check the Printer Connection: Make sure your printer is properly connected to your computer or network. If it's a wired connection, ensure the cable is securely connected. If wireless, double-check your Wi-Fi settings and signal strength.

Set as Default Printer: Ensure your LaserJet is set as the default printer on your computer. This can usually be done through the Control Panel or System Settings, under "Printers & Scanners".

Use HP Print and Scan Doctor: HP offers a diagnostic tool called HP Print and Scan Doctor for Windows that can help identify and fix common printing problems. Download and run this tool to see if it can resolve the issue.

2. Router and Network Issues

Given that you mentioned having rebooted your router and verified the network connection, it's possible that the issue might be network-related.

Solutions:

Static IP Address: Assign a static IP address to your printer. Dynamic IP addresses (which change) can sometimes cause connection problems. Check your printer's manual or online resources on how to assign a static IP address through the printer’s control panel or web interface.

Check Firewall Settings: Sometimes, firewalls or security software can block communication with network printers. Ensure your firewall is not blocking your printer. You might need to add an exception for your printer in your firewall settings.

3. Printer Software and Drivers

Outdated or corrupt printer drivers can lead to printing problems.

Solutions:

  • Update Printer Firmware and Drivers: Visit HP’s official website, locate your printer model, and download the latest firmware and drivers. Install these updates to ensure your printer is running the latest software.

4. Print Spooler Service

The Print Spooler service on your computer manages print jobs. If there’s an issue with this service, it could cause printing problems.

Solutions:

  • Restart Print Spooler Service: You can restart the Print Spooler service from the Services application on your computer. Search for "Services", find "Print Spooler" in the list, right-click it, and select "Restart".

5. Direct Connection as a Temporary Solution

As a temporary measure, try connecting your printer directly to your computer via USB (if possible) to see if it prints successfully. This can help determine if the issue is related specifically to the network connection.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
