"HP Printer Assistant" stopped working today on my Windows 10 laptop - want to scan a document.

There is no longer a driver available for the "HP Printer Assistant", so I installed HP Smart, which provides a scan but it does not indicate where it stores the scan file - and the HP Smart that was provided does not offer a way to define the destination folder for a scan.

There is still a full driver installation package listed for Windows 10 --

Before you install the full driver printer software,

Uninstall the existing printer software from Programs and Features 

Next, Restart the computer and log in.

The installation of the full driver generally adds at least one, possibly two shortcuts to the Desktop.

 Note:  Printer Assistant, HP Scan Assistant, and HP Scan are dependent on printer model and supported software options.

HP Smart - Windows

True - At this writing, with the exception of the HP Smart Shortcuts that can be created to save to various Cloud storage locations, HP Smart does not understand destination folder assignments.

If you can download the software today, HP Scan and Capture is perhaps still available at the

 Microsoft Store  -- the app is about to be retired forever, unfortunately -- the app does understand using a default folder destination. 

What else?

Windows Scan --  The app is less robust than other options but it might suffice.  

“Get” the application from the Store >  Windows Scan

NAPS2 -- third party software -- is still around and worth a look if you've not tried it.

• Download-Save-Install >  NAPS2 
• Not another PDF Scanner – free program scans PDF files and image(s) as .jpeg or PDF file(s).
• Not always simple “Plug and Play”, nonetheless, this free software is powerful and configurable.
• NAPS2 might require that the full driver printer software is installed.
