How do I scan a page from a book, when I can"t close the lid?

I think the process of scanning pages from a book would be more or less successful depending on the book. For example, if the spine of the book is quite stiff, the book may not open as easily. There are likely a number of practical examples on the internet showing how to place, hold, and scan pages from a book.
