scanning different sizes of paper

All of a sudden my scanner does not want to scan different sizes of paper. any ideas

  1. What have you already tried to fix the change?
  2. Which scan software are you using?


Some of the "usual suspects"...


Example: HP Smart for Windows

  • The Page Size is incorrect or left on a "different" field size.  (Common mistake)
  • Duplex is selected but the document being scanned does not support 2-sided scan.  (Not directly related but duplex setups can cause odd errors / results)
  • The Scan Preset is selected as Photo but the Page Size is incorrect or not compatible.



Example:  Webscan

Similar to using other software, Webscan is sensitive to compatible settings.

For example, select the proper Paper Size






HP Smart for Windows

HP Smart is an application available from the Windows Store.

Learn how to use HP Smart on your Windows 10 computer.

Open the Software and Drivers Support Website for your printer > Check the Box Get the App


HP Printers - Using the HP Smart App (Windows 10)

NOTE:  Website includes the HP Smart software for Windows and Mobile devices, plus an FAQ section to assist with questions / issues


Webscan – located in the Embedded Web Server (EWS) – No additional software

If the printer is on the network,

  • Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar
  • Tab Settings > Security > Administrator Settings > make sure Webscan is checked / enabled
  • Tab Scan > Webscan
