@pjcbells, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Does the issue occur only while scanning/copying from the Automatic document feeder?

Have you tried using the flatbed glass and check if the issue persists?

Make sure the Glass and glass stripe is clean, you may use lint free cloth to clean the glass.

Reset the printer

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  2. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  4. Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  5. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.

Also, perform the steps mentioned in this document under 'Lines or color bands in copies'.

Let me know how this goes.

The lines only appear when using the ADF.  Good copies come from the glass!

I have reset the printer and cleaned the rollers with filtered water and a lint free cloth as in the article.

The lines are now not continuous.  On an A4 page they are 10cm, gap 10cm, line 2.5cm, gap 6cm, line 1cm so I don't feel that it is the rollers that are causing the lines  There are also fainter lines 1.5cm from the main line on one side and 1cm on the other.

It's better than it was, what else could be causing it?

@pjcbells

If you are still seeing vertical lines on the copies from the ADF after performing all the troubleshooting steps, I'm afraid this could be a hardware issue with the scanner component present under the ADF glass strip. Please contact our HP Support team for Service Options:

1) Click on this link - https://support.hp.com/us-en/contact-hp?openCLC=true

2) Select your product type below.

3) Enter the serial of your device.

4) Select the country from the drop-down.

5) Select the appropriate option based on your preference.

6) Fill the web-form and proceed further.

Keep me posted for any other assistance.
