Hi @inder91,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

If your HP printer is not connecting to HP Smart and shows an “Unknown cartridge used” message, here’s how to troubleshoot both issues:

Part 1: Fix “Unknown Cartridge Used” Error

This usually means the printer is rejecting the cartridge due to:

  • Non-genuine or refilled cartridge
  • Region mismatch (e.g., using US cartridges in an India-region printer)
  • Cartridge chip error or damage

Try These Steps:

  1. Power Reset
    • Turn off the printer and unplug it for 60 seconds.
    • Plug it back in and turn it on.

  2. Reinsert the Cartridge
    • Remove the cartridge.
    • Gently clean the gold contacts with a lint-free cloth.
    • Reinsert firmly.

  3. Check Cartridge Authenticity
    • Look for the HP security label on the cartridge box.
    • Use the HP Cartridge Authentication Tool

  4. Update Printer Firmware

Part 2: Fix HP Smart App Not Connecting

Steps to Reconnect:

  1. Reset Network Settings on Printer
    • On the printer control panel, go to Settings > Network > Restore Network Defaults.

  2. Re-add Printer in HP Smart
    • Open HP Smart on your PC or phone.
    • Click Add Printer and follow the steps to reconnect via Wi-Fi.

  3. Ensure Same Network
    • Make sure your printer and device are on the same Wi-Fi network.
    • Avoid guest networks or VPNs.

  4. Temporarily Disable Firewall/Antivirus
    • Sometimes, security software blocks HP Smart from detecting the printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
