Officejet Pro 8600 e-all-in-one series
macOS 10.14 Mojave

I have never been able to scan efficiently with the Officejet Pro 8600 e-all-in-one series with my iMac. It is wirelessly connected and printing works fine but scanning has always been a chore. I installed PrinCentral Pro on my iPad several years ago so I could print douments from that device and I believe it uses Apple's AirPrint to accomplish the connection. I do know that my Officejet uses that connection (and driver too?) because it says so in the System Preferences for Printers & Scanners (i.e., HP Officejet Pro 8600-AirPrint). I suspect this is what is causing my my problem but I can't find that driver and delete it and reinstall the HP driver. When I want to scan, it always takes a long time to open the scanner, or it doesn't open, or it times out in previewing a document. If it eventually does allow me to scan, it is a convoluted process that requires me to select what I want to scan  after the preview. I downloaded the current version of the proper 8600 driver (the N911a version dated Sept 2018.  When I go through the installation steps I get to the screen where it says that there is the AirPrint device and it recommends using the HP driver so I can accesss all scanning functions. I say, YES, please do that but it doessn't.  back and make sure I have correctly insstalled the HP driver.  I've gone through this process multiple times and now the scanner doesn't work at all.

What can I do?

A warm welcome to HP Support Community!

AirPrint has all the features that are included in the HP printer driver. Removing the existing Scanner Application and then installing HP Easy Scan may resolve the issue. Let's try these steps:

1.) Open Finder, click Applications.

2.) Delete the existing HP scanner applications by moving it to trash.

3.) Download and install HP Easy Scan from here

Instruction on how to use HP Easy Scan can be found here

Let me know how it goes!
