Automatic Document Feeder Not Operating Properly

HP Recommended
HP7525
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

When I try to use the automatic document feeder the machine does one of the following (does them all, but at different times):

Does not detect ANY documents in the ADF

Detects documents in the ADF but then if scanning duplex fails to detect loaded documents when I turn the pages around

Sometimes when I try to use the flatbed glass the automatic document feeder pre-empts the flatbed glass reporting it is not detecting any document in the feeder and then I cannot copy/scan from the flatbed glass, either.

@KatieDavus, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

This could be an issue with the paper sensors in the document feeder. Let us try these steps:

Reset the printer

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  2. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  4. Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  5. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.

Update the printer firmware

Clean the ADF rollers and the separator pad

  1. Get a lint-free cloth and distilled water.

  2. Remove the original document from the ADF.

  3. Turn off the printer.

  4. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

  5. Open the ADF cover.

  6. Find the paper pick rollers and the separator pad inside the ADF.

  7. Lightly dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with filtered or distilled water, and then squeeze any excess liquid from the cloth.

  8. Use the damp cloth to clean the paper pick rollers and the separator pad.

  9. Leave the ADF cover open for two minutes to allow the rollers and pad to dry.

  10. Close the ADF cover.

  11. Reconnect the power cord to the printer, and then turn on the printer.

  12. Slide in the paper width guides until they rest against the sides of the paper.

  13. Try to scan or copy with the ADF.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
