Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi. Was previously using an old Toshiba with an old Windows OS, could print and scan fine. Have just installed printer on new Dell laptop running Windows 10. Can print, but cannot even seem to download the software to scan, let alone scan. I just get an error message: "HP TWAIN: Open data source failed". Can you help? The printer is not that old and I really need to be able to scan!

Thanks.

@Dano7, Welcome to HP Support Community!

I understand you are getting a “TWAIN” error while scanning. I will certainly do my best to help you fix this issue.

Let’s first try to fix this issue using HP Print and Scan Doctor (PSDR). PSDR is an automated tool that can diagnose and resolve printing and scanning problems. Please go to http://hp.care/2bZ9w2q to download and run HP PSDR.

Once you open the program, click on “Fix scanning” to try and get this issue fixed.

PS: If you have an important document to scan and if the issue is still not fixed, try using the “MS Paint” application to scan. Once you open the “Paint” application, go to File and choose “From scanner or camera” to complete your scans.

If you still have issues, follow the steps below-

  • Press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window, type “services.msc” and press ok to get services window.
  • Scroll down to “Remote Procedure Call (RPC)” – right-click and go to properties. Make sure the service is started and the startup type is “Automatic”.
  • Now scroll down to “Shell Hardware Detection” – right-click and go to properties. Make sure the service is started and the startup type is “Automatic”
  • Now scroll to Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) and restart the service.

Try Scanning.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hi, thank you for the reply.

I think your suggestions have in part solved the problem! The one thing you suggested which seems to have made the difference was restarting the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service. It was still a bit of a faff but after restarting the printer and the laptop (twice) after that, on the second restart the HP Smart app immediately came up from the Microsoft store as a download. I can now scan!

Thank you very much for your help.
