I have 2 of these printers, one at home and one at school, with the desktop software installed on my computer. I can scan from one of them, but when I scan from the other, it says it is unable to communicate with the scanner. I can scan from either from the HP Smart app just fine, but I prefer the desktop app since it gives me more scanning options. I have run the print and scan doctor and tried everything. The only thing that seems to work is uninstalling and reinstalling the software.
