Color Laser Jet Pro MFP M281fdw
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Although I can print from my networked printer (Color Laser Jet Pro MFP M-281fdw), I cannot scan from it.  I keep getting error messages saying the printer is not connected.  However, the printer is clearly connected to wifi as the display on the printer clearly shows the wifi connected and with strong signal strength.  Despite reinstalling the latest HP software, restarting my laptop, using HP Print and Scan Doctor (v. 5.4.1), nothing has worked. As well, on a separate note, I am absolutely shocked about how slow the HP software appears to work.  Things that should be instantaneous takes eons!  For instance, how long does it take the HP Print and Scan Doctor to complete a scan???  My latest try in order to diagnose this printing problem has been going for 45 minutes and still hasn't completed! **bleep**?!?

This is incredibly disappointing and frustrating.  HP's printers are typically rock solid and network connectivity between the wifi and the printer is hardly new or revolutionary. HP - you need to pull your socks up and fix what seems to be an issue with your software.  There are a lot of other companies who make good printers.

@colinadams71, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Are you trying to scan to email or to the computer?

Which app are you using to scan?

If you are trying to scan to email or to a network folder, apologies for the inconvenience caused. It seems like there is an issue with the HP web services and we are working on it. You will have to wait until it gets resolved. Kindly try again after couple of hours.

Keep me posted.

found  this out malwarebytes has a conflict causing the problem

from malwarebytes forum

Web Protection component is somehow interfering with the scanner's communication, possibly on a driver level and if that is the case it means we can't exclude it as driver's cannot be excluded from Web Protection.

this looks to be the problem here also hp repair tool shows a driver communication error when Web Protection is enabled, when disabled shows no error and scanner works.
