Printers work differently and this includes the particular features in Fax for a given printer.

In general, 

• Switch ON Auto Answer
• Set the number of rings lower on the answering machine - and higher on the Fax.  You want your answering machine to answer calls so the printer can detect the fax tone and pick up.
• Use the Fax cord that shipped with the printer - these are a "two-wire" phone cord.  (Phone cords on a typical landline phone have four wires.)
