Officejet Pro 7740
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My Officejet Pro 7740 printer has been successfully scanning to an Integral USB stick but, suddenly, I got the message that the USB is read only. Nothing has changed to the USB since it did accept scanned documents. I have tried other USB sticks with the same result. I have also tried a reset and updating the firmware but neither has had any effect. The Integral USB has the HPSCANS folder so why does the printer not scan to the USB?

Hi @ignatiusdragon,

I'd like to help!

I understand you are not able to scan to memory device and I'll be glad to help you out. However, for an accurate solution, I would need more details:

  • The memory device that you are using is it encrypted?
  • While file system did you chose when you formatted the memory device, was it NTFS or FAT32?
  • Are you able to copy files to the memory device using a PC?

Let me know!

Hi Jay

The memory device is not encrypted.

I am using Windows 10 Home 64-bit and the memory device is formatted FAT32.

I am able to copy files to the memory device using a PC.

Any suggestions?

Let's try a power reset on the printer

Reset the product

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn the printer on. HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.

Also, try updating the printer's firmware - HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

and then just try and scan

Keep me posted!

I have tried all these suggestion a number of times without any effect. I have also checked that I have the latest firmware update.

We can perform a factory defaults on the printer to resolve the issue

  • The reset instructions are specific for your printer and performing those steps on a different printer may corrupt the device.
  • I've sent you a private message with reset instructions, follow the reset instruction to perform a full reset and re-initialize the printer.
  • In order to access your private messages, click the private message icon on the upper right corner of your HP Forums profile, next to your profile Name or simply click on this link: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/notes/privatenotespage

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
