HP Envy 5540
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

My HP Envy 500 printer has always been able to easily print out  pre-printed return labels issued from the company where I am returning an item--now suddenly it won't. I have tried everything--i.e., disconnecting power cord, etc., etc.

My printer issued a report entitled: WEB ACCESS TEST RESULTS. It tells me "This printer is currently configured with a Domain Name System (DNS) server address which does not allow the DNS server name to be confirmed. On most networks, this can prevent the printer from accessing Web pages over the Internet. I attempted the solution(s), as discussed above--they didn't work.  HELP!!

Welcome to HP forums, I see that the printer is giving you an error message about the DNS server address. To assist you with this issue, I need the following details:

  1. Are you an Instant ink customer?
  2. Is the printer making copies? Place a document face down on the scanner glass and press the copy option on the printer control panel. Let me know if it makes a good copy or not.

Alternatively, try the steps below to resolve the DNS error:

  • Obtain the IP address of the printer – You can touch the “wireless” icon on the printer control panel to get the IP address.
  • Type the IP address on your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.
  • Go to "Network" tab - General - Select "Network protocols" - Select "Enable IPv4 only" (or similar) - Apply the settings.
  • Go to the “Network” tab – Click on “Wireless (802.11) – Then click on “Network address (IPv4)
  • Click on the radio button which says “Manual IP” and then click “Suggest a manual IP address” to give a manual IP address to your printer.
  • Click on radio button which says “Manual DNS Server” and under manual preferred type 8.8.8.8 and under manual alternate type 8.8.4.4 (This is Google DNS server address)

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks so much for your suggestions. I followed the steps, but came to an impasse whenI arrived at "Properties"  - where I was supposed to click on "Web Access" - there was no listing of Web Access available to click! So I had to stop there. Anything I should  attempt to try now?

Thanks for the reply.

I appreciate your time and effort.

Perform root level uninstalltion to remove all the printer related software's.

  • In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.
  • Select your HP printer.
  • Select Uninstall.
  • In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.
  • In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”
  • Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.
  • Type printui.exe /s and click OK.
  • Click on Drivers tab.
  • Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click Remove at the bottom.
  • Select OK.

Download and install full feature driver for the printer

Click here to download the driver.

Let me know if that helps.

This ia a cotinuation of my previous correspondence with "Sandy" - apparently I have to re-start conversation since my delay in responding was not prompt enough. I did not realize there was a time element involved! Sandy provided me with a series to steps to uninstall my printer in order to solve my initial problem. I followed those steps up to a point, where I was unable to continue, and I had to press "Cancel" - system would not allow me to unistall printer. In this regard, I need further assistance. I wonder if I could get back to my initial correspondence with Sandy, which  involved a series of details. Please advise!! Many thanks.

Hi Rick - Is it possible for you to refer back to my conversation with "Sandy" of just about a week or so ago? It would be helpful, since  many details involved. Please let me know. Apparently I didn't respond to Sandy in a given amount of time, & our correspondence was stopped.
