HP OfficeJet Pro 8730
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi everybody,

I own a HP OfficeJet Pro 8730 (that shares the same firmware as the 8740 model as far as I know) and I'm experiencing a very annoying issue already adviced in other posts of the community.

After upgrading firmware to ver. 1834A (maybe since previous update even), if I use the "scan to network folder" feature (that I use very often...), I can't shut down the printer by pushing the power off button and I necessarily have to unplug the power cord (also power off daily schedule works, so i wonder if a printer power off software for Windows exists and would work).

Differently, until I only use the 8730 to print and not to scan to network, it keeps on shutting down correcty by hitting the power button.
I own a pc with Windows 10 Professional and I tried every kind of solution to fix this issue, so I already tried resetting the printer to factory defaults and I experienced the bug with both LAN and WiFi.

Scans keep being saved to the right folder correctly, even if I use the "scan to network folder" feature 10-20 times before powering the printer off. The only BIG problem is that you can't power the product off correctly.

Just to be more exact, it seems that the printer has the shut down problem when it communicates to pc via LAN/WiFi, as I noticed that also using "Scan to PC" feature causes the issue.

Also, not sure if it's related to the issue I just described, after updating to 1834A firmware I was experiencing another issue, that I was able to fix, but i don't know if it's a firmware bug or something specific to the smb3 protocol. After upgrading to 1834A I couldn't save to network folders with pre-existing profiles due to a credentials error. I assume that was because the account I use on the pc had no password, so I fixed it in the first instance by creating a profile on the pc that was dedicated to the printer and that had a password (of course adding this new user in the sharing and security tabs of the shared folder), then I definitely fixed the problem by disabling the smb3 protocol in the network settings on the web interface of the printer (smb1 and smb2 protocol work flawlessly with this feature even if the account has no password).
After some tests I did, the power off bug happens with all smb 1, 2 and 3 protocols enabled and even if i try to enable just one of the 3.

Sadly, I guess it is firmware related and i wonder if there's some beta version firmware that might fix it.
I really hope a new firmware update comes as soon as possible to fix this very very annoying issue, as it really keeps me far from buying a second 8730 for my office, being a really BIG problem that was incredibly introduced with new firmwares and that was not existing at start.

@Paolo8730,

Welcome to the HP Forums!

I’d love to help!

Awesome job on diagnosing the issue correctly and performing smart troubleshooting before posting your question on HP forums. Kudos to you on that score.  It is a privilege to work with tech-savvy and technically competent customers like you.

The latest firmware (Ver 1843A) for the printer contains addresses an important security vulnerability and I am assuming that it is causing this issue. However, in order that I may provide you with an accurate solution, I will need a few more details and I would appreciate if you could, perhaps elaborate on your concern.

  • How is the printer connected to the computer?
  • Have you made any software or hardware changes on the computer?

While you respond to that, I recommend you flash the firmware again using a USB cable and check whether the issue is resolved.

Please refer to the below article to perform the update.

If you continue to face the issue, I am sending you a private message with instruction. Please follow the steps and test the printer.

Let me know how it goes and you have a good day ahead.

If you wish to show appreciation for my efforts, mark my post as Accept as Solution. Your feedback counts!

Take care.

Cheers!
