M479fdw now erroring when scanning multiple individual pages to a single document

HP Recommended
HP Laser Jet MFP M479fdw
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have been using this laser jet for just over a year now and performing this very task that whole time, but all of a sudden this AM when trying scan 3 individual pages on the flatbed into a single document, was instead presented with an error screen that read:  "Scan Error: There was an internal processing error.  Please retry or manually check the firmware updates."

I can scan & send a 3 page document - after copying one of the pages of the prior scan to allow that (which of course is not a sustainable solution) - so long as I feed it in from the document feeder.  Support page and chat technician suggested factory reset did not help.  Removing the printer device from the laptop and reinstalling after downloading did not help.

Any thoughts?
