Deskjet F4583
macOS 10.14 Mojave

When I came to my office this morning, the Power and Error lights were flashing simultaneously on my Deskjet F4583.  It was hooked up though a USB hub, so I disconnected it and hooked the printer directly into my MacBook Pro.  I rebooted the computer, no joy.  I disconnected the power cords, no joy.  I disconnected the USB cord, no luck.  I can neither print nor scan.

The left hand display shows "E" for error; there is no error number.  I checked the Utility and both the color and black ink cartridges are full; I replaced both, just in case, but that did NOT solve the problem.

This was NOT a problem yesterday; it happened overnight.  No power disruption / failure.

The Virtual Assistant cannot address the matter.  Does anyone else have any ideas that I might try?  Thank you.

Solution one: Turn the All-in-One off and then on again

Follow these steps to turn the product off and then on again.

  1. Press the Power button () to turn off the product.

  2. Wait 15 seconds.

  3. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.

  4. Check the lights on the control panel to make sure that they are no longer blinking.

  5. Try the intended task again.

  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Reset the All-in-One

Follow these steps to reset the product.

Step one: Perform a power reset

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

  2. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

  3. Wait at least 15 seconds.

  4. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

  5. Reconnect the power cord to the printer.

  6. Turn the printer on.

Step two: Print a self-test page

Printing a self-test page verifies if the hardware functions correctly.

  1. Load U.S. letter or A4, unused, plain white paper into the input tray.

  2. On the control panel, press and hold the Paper Type button and Resize to Fit button at the same time.

Figure: Press these buttons to print a self-test report

  • Paper Type button

  • Resize to Fit button

Release both buttons at the same time. The product prints a self-test report.

Thank you TEJ1602 for your recommendations.

However, I attempted them previously, as the Virtual Assistant recommended.  I did so again, after receiving your reply.  I regret to say that they did not solve the issue.  Might you have additional suggestions to try?

Again, thanks for your help so far.
