@BobG9 I suggest you upgrade the printer firmware using the steps in this link: click here for details, followed by the steps to perform a hard reset mentioned below:

  • Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
  • Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  • NOTE:
  • HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  • Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.

Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

@Nejoki

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Let's try to reset the Printer here:

Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.

  1. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
  2. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  4. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  5. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  6. NOTE: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
  7. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  8. Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  9. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

This error can occur if the printer trays are installed incorrectly. Make sure the printer is located on a flat surface, and then make sure the photo tray moves smoothly within the paper tray guides.

  1. Make sure the printer is positioned on a flat surface.

  2. Push in the output tray extender.

  3. Pull out the input tray, but do not remove it.

  4. Remove the output tray.

  5. Make sure the photo tray is seated correctly, and that the photo tray guide tabs (grey) are sliding beneath the main tray guides (black) on both the left and right side of the input tray.

Image: Tabs outside and inside guide rails

If they are not in the correct position, gently move the photo tray to align the tab gaps, and then gently press the tabs back into position.

The photo tray should move freely with no resistance.

  6. Reinstall the output tray, and then make sure the edges line up with the input tray.

  7. Try to print.

  8. If the error persists, try printing or copying a document with the output tray removed.

If the error only happens with the output tray installed, the output tray might need to be replaced.

Let me know if this helps.

I went through this identical same process here:

Re: Photo Tray blocked on Envy 5660 printer - HP Support Community - 7050342

In the end, my Envy 5660 goes right back to the default error "Photo Tray Blocked", but it is not blocked. The tray is not binding and nothing is blocking it. With this error code active, the printer is totally non-functioning and will not allow any scanning, emailing, or any other function.

HP, there has to be a resolution.

Thank you for the additional suggestion. My printer was already set to Auto Updates but I performed the Printer Maintenance / Update the Printer and received the message:

"The most current updates have already been installed. No new updates are available at this time".

I had unplugged this printer and set it aside when the error continued to block me from using the printer. Ironically, when I plugged the printer back in this morning to perform your update suggestion, the error message has not returned. Not sure why but will accept the fact that the printer is back working. 👌

@BobG9 The unplugging and re-plugging of the printer cords, releases the excessive static causing such issues, and that's the reason its working now,

that said, I'm glad it works fine, now and if you ever need anything else, feel free to write to us anytime.

If you wish to thank me for my efforts, you could click on "Accept as solution" on my post as the solution should help others too.
