Printer is displaying a message of "incompatible cartridge or cartridge jam"

I have an HP Office Jet 4500 and after unplugging the printer, for over 30 seconds, several times and changing out the cartridges, I continue to receive a message display of "incompatible cartridge or cartridge jam." I have also turned it off and on multiple times, but I continue to get the same results. Please let me know what I need to do to make this printer work.
