Hi,

Thanks for using the HP Support Community.

 

Try this:

 

HP Scan Extended

http://ftp.hp.com/pub/scanners/HPScanExt/HPScanExt.msi

Once it's downloaded and installed, go to Start > All Programs > HP > HP Scan Extended > Run "HP Scan Extended"

I am getting the same error message when I try to scan a document. I can see the scanned page in the background but the error is on top "Error. There was a problem loading your Smart Task. Please try again." The HP Smart Task window now will not close; I have to use the Task Manager to end that task to get the window to close. I tried reloading the printer software and updating drivers. That did not help. Windows 10 performed an update a couple days ago. In the event log I see the following "Application Hang" "Error 1002 (101)": 

The program HP.Smart.exe version 95.1.527.0 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Security and Maintenance control panel.
