HP Office jet 6970
Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan

New printer, first time trying to scan. When I try to scan, I get the following error messages:

On my Mac :

Scanner communication cannot be established. Ensure your device is powered on, check the connection, and ensure your network is functioning properly. If these conditions are correct, restart the device and try scanning again.

On my printer:

The scan could not be completed. Make sure the computer is connected to the printer and try again.

I have disconnected and reconnected, and then moved to a direct power source - but I get the same error messages. The Mac sees the printer and the printer sees the Mac, wifi is all fine. Anyone help pls?

Welcome to HP forums, I see that you are getting scanner connection issue.

Add the AirPrint printer to the Mac printer queue

  1. Click the Apple menu, click System Preferences, and then click Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners.

Figure : Example of the Printers & Scanners window

Example of the Printers & Scanners window
  2. Check if your printer name displays in the Printers list, and then do one of the following steps.

    • If your printer is listed, remove and re-add the printer to confirm it is set up for AirPrint. Click the printer name, click the minus sign  to delete the printer, click the plus sign , click Add Printer or Scanner, click the printer name and then continue to the next step.

    • If your printer is not listed, click the plus sign, click Add Printer or Scanner, click the name of your printer, and then continue to the next step.

  3. Confirm AirPrint or Secure AirPrint displays in the Use or Print Using menu, and then click Add.

Select AirPrint from the Use menu
  4. Open a document or photo, click File, and then click Print.

Hi Sandytechy20 - the printer appears to properly connected, as the print function is operating. The Mac recognises the printer and viceversa - it's the scanner that's not working - do you think this is still worth doing?

Thanks for the reply.

I appreciate your time and effort.

I understand the issue better now.

Check the scanner bar functionality: Lift the scanner lid slightly, and then press the Copy button or icon to start a copy job. If the scanner light does not move or illuminate, the scanner mechanism requires servicing.

Let me know how it goes.

Cheers.

As per error messages that I've included in my original description, I'm guessing that it's some other kind of problem. But I havechecked the light just now - it is working.
