My Officejet Pro 8620 does not seem to see or sense the photo sitting on the glass to be scanned.  Will only scan from the Auto Document Feeder.

Thank you for joining the HP Support Community

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Are you facing the same issue while making a copy?

Let's follow the below steps

Step 1: Reset the printer and check the power source

Reset the printer to calibrate the scanner mechanism, and then check the power source to confirm the printer is getting enough power to operate the copier.

  1. Press the Power button to turn on the printer, if it is not already on.

  2. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.

  3. Disconnect the power cord from the power source, and then wait 30 seconds.

  4. If you previously connected the power cord to a power strip or multi-plug outlet adapter, reconnect the cord directly to a wall outlet to ensure the printer is getting enough power.

  5. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer, and then turn on the printer.

  6. If you have an HP DeskJet 3700 series printer, calibrate the scanner after resetting the printer.

  7. Load the original document or photo, then start a copy job.

    • If the issue persists, connect the printer power cord to a different wall outlet to determine if the original outlet is causing the issue.

    • If the issue persists with a different wall outlet, continue to the next step.

Step 2: Check the scanner bar functionality

Perform a visual test of the scanner bar and light for mechanical issues.

  1. Remove any original documents or photos from the scanner glass.

  2. Lift the scanner lid slightly, and then press the Copy button or icon.

Check if the scanner light does not move or illuminate, this could be a hardware issue.

Have a great day!

Scanner is insisting on using the ADF to scan anything.  Has worked prior without issue.  All firmware and other aspects of the printer working normally.

Mac OS Catalina 10.15   OfficeJet Pro 6978

I'm having the same problem.  The scanner works fine from the ADF but when I try to scan by putting the page on the glass, I get an error message saying the following:

Automatic Document Feeder is Empty

No items were detected in the Automatic Document Feeder. Please place your originals into the Automatic Document Feeder and start the scan again.

I am also having this issue with the HP 6978 on Mac OS Catalina 10.15.

Just updated to macOS Catalina

"Automatic Document Feeder is Empty

No items were detected in the Automatic Document Feeder. Please place your originals into the Automatic Document Feeder and start the scan again."

Please help, I previously can scan from the scanner glass with no issues, now I can't

Unfortunately, HP Easy Scan is not currently supported in macOS Catalina. For devices like the OfficeJet Pro, the symptom is exactly as described. Anything loaded through the ADF will work fine but scanning from the flat bed generates the ADF Empty error.

HP is working to restore the full functionality of HP Easy Scan in macOS Catalina.

In the interim you can use Image Capture to retrieve scans from either the flat bed or the ADF.

Image Capture instructions are in the linked post above.

Scanner will copy the image from the scanner glass to print.  Scanner will scan the image from Automatic Document Feeder to my computer.  So the scanner works, the copier works.  What it will NOT do, that I NEED it to do, and have spent hours trying to trouble shoot... is to scan from the scanner glass to my computer.  It will NOT scan from the scanner glass to my computer.

EVERY time I try I get a Scan failed message on my computer stating that:

No items were detected in the Automatic Document Feeder. Please place your originals into the Automatic Document Feeder and start the scan again.

AND on the printer end I get this message:

The scan could not be completed due to one or more of the following issues:
- Connection to the computer is lost
- The scan application on the computer is currently in use.
- OCR application is not installed on the computer.
See the computer monitor for details.

I have turned off and on both my computer and printer - including unplugging it for 15 minutes.  I reset the printer to factory settings and deleted the software on my computer and then re-downloaded and re-installed the HP Utility and the HP Easy Scan.  I connected the printer to the internet and my computer to the internet.  And, from my computer I can print.  From the printer I can scan from the automatic document feeder.  I can put an original on the scanner glass and print it.  BUT I CANNOT scan from the scanner glass to my computer.  I don't want to put it through the automatic feeder because I don't want it bent or anything, plus it is in pieces.  I put it on the glass and it copies and prints fine, but I need it loaded to my computer to work on it and photoshop.  Still can't do that simple task but everything seems to be working on my printer and between my printer and computer so I don't know what to do.

It scanned perfectly fine one month ago from the scanner glass to the computer, I haven't done anything to it to change it.  I don't know why I am having this problem.

I have an HP Officejet Pro 8610

If anyone can tell me how to scan from the scanner glass to my computer - ASAP I will be so grateful.  I have no idea why it will no longer do this, it always worked fine for me in the past and I have spent hours now trouble shooting.  If possible I don't want to pay for it to be serviced because I am sure that can be expensive, especially when everything seems to be in working order.

So because I updated my computer the scanner won't work!!!!  This is outrageous...

I am currently downgrading my Mac to macOS Mojave and hoping that it will relieve this problem.  I think (crossing fingers) that my iCloud has backed up my computer.  I should know in about a half an hour.  I will let you know if that solves the problem for me, it might help you all as well.
