Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

About a year ago, scanning stopped being available.  It doesn't show up on any menu as a scanner, only as a printer.  Under Preview or any other application that scans, the Import From Scan option is greyed out.  the "HP Scan" app doesn't show it on the list, etc.  Interestingly, from my Macbook laptop unlike from the desktop, I am at least able to click on the printer under System Preferences, and I can actually click on Open Scanner, but when I do, the scan option is still greyed out.  For a while, I was able to use the scan to e-mail app: cumbersome and annoying, but it worked more or less.  Then that stopped working as well.  Any suggestions?

@PatrickComposer, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Have you tried using HP Easy Scan or Apple Image capture apps to scan and check if the issue persists?

Try making a standalone copy and check if that works. By this, we can conclude if the scanner hardware is working fine.

Let us try these steps:

Update the printer firmware

Click here to download and install the latest firmware from your MAC.

Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

Also, check for any software updates on MAC

Click the Apple icon > About This Mac > Software Update and install any available update.

Click the Apple menu, and then select System Preferences.

Depending on your operating system version, click Print & Fax, Print & Scan, or Printers & Scanners.

Click the name of your printer, click the Minus sign, and then delete all the envy 5540 printer entries.

Click the Plus sign, and then click Add Printer or Scanner.

Click the Use or Print Using box, and then select AirPrint

Click Add to add the printer to the list.

Under 'kind', select 'Bonjour multifunction'

Try to print and scan.

For more info on how to scan from MAC, refer to this document.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Standalone copy works fine.  HP Scan on the Mac does not work and Image Capture shows "No camera or scanner connected."  I'll try updating the firmware as you suggested and see if that helps...

Sure, try updating the printer firmware and the software on MAC.

Also, install the printer as shown in my post.
