HP Officejet Pro 8600
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

While scanning a stack of 20 pages at a time, usually after a 2nd or 3rd stack, the feeder will stop halfway and not continue scanning.  The mini screen on the scanner/printer shows "scanning" but the page is stuck and does not move through the ADF cycle.  I have what I feel is sufficient RAM [32 Gig] and enough free Hard Drive space [scanning to a 2nd internal hard drive with 2.5 Tb free].  I usualy resort to a variety of cleaning rollers, typing %temp% to delete all in the temp directory, shutting down & restarting everything and it seems to be OK for awhile and then it happens again.  This happens whether I am scanning single or dual side.  With dual side it's a pain because sometimes Im on the reverse side and it will stop which means I have to cancel the entire batch and rescan it.  I have also downloaded all the drivers (at least when I go to check all is current).  I don' have a problem scanning fromthe flatbed, this is strictly an ADF intermitent problem.  I have this connected to a USB [I believe a 2.0, haven't tried the 3.0 slot].  Earlier I had it connected to a laptop which it was doing the same thing so I figured I put it on a faster, more robust machine/desktop.

Any additional help, suggestions would be apprciated.

Greetings ALL... thank you for all of the trial and error efforts that has been posted. I finally turned to contacting HP directly ...& they did some troubleshooting to replicate the scenario and offer some suggestions. While they, too, wasn't able to offer a true resolution I was able to apply everything here and there to come up with an answer I would like to share:

1- make sure the scanner is plugged direct (wall).
2- make sure the scanner firmware is up to date.
3- make sure all software is up to date.

At the end I turned to using the wireless versus the USB. The USB cord I had wasn't an "authentic HP Brand" which was what was asked of me.

Was also advised that this type of scanner is not really made to do a large quantity of scans in one setting... but after putting it on the wireless I have had 85% more success then before. While the scanner still pauses i can scan more and reset it easier in order to continue to scan.

Again, hope this can help others.

Hey there! @Citsejamalak, Thanks for stopping by HP forums!

I understand you have issues scanning from ADF on your printer.

Don't worry I will try to help you out.

Did you make any changes to your printer?

Are you able to make copies using the ADF?

Try making 20-30 blank copies using the ADF and check if the copies are working fine.

Please try few steps recommended below.

Clean the ADF pick rollers

Dust, paper fiber, and other debris might accumulate on the pick rollers and cause paper feed issues. To help prevent paper feed issues, clean the rollers inside the ADF.
Open the ADF cover.
Lightly moisten a clean, lint-free cloth with distilled, filtered, or bottled water.
   CAUTION:
Do not use tap water or alcohol. Alcohol can dry out rollers. Tap water contains impurities that can damage rollers.
Press the cloth against the roller while rotating it with your fingers. Apply a moderate amount of pressure to remove dust or dirt buildup.
Clean the separator pad using the same cloth.
Firmly close the ADF cover.
Try using the ADF again.
If the ADF picked the paper, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

Refer this article to further troubleshoot scanning issues with ADF.

Let me know if this works!

Have a great weekend ahead! 🙂

Hi there. Thanks for the response. It was helpful knowing not to use alcohol on the rollers. I had been using (only recently) a long swab and alcohol. I will now refrain and use the bottled water.

I must be clearer in my description/problem-- I don't have a problem with the paper going through/being picked up by the ADF. It goes through fine -- but seems after about 50-60 dual side scans the page will go through and the scan "stalls" as if the computer and/or scanner has run out of memory. I have to manually pull out the paper sometimes or by turning the scanner off it pushes the paper out then shuts off.

Hello, @Citsejamalak

I see that you were interacting with @A4Apollo. He is out of the office and I'd like to jump in with a suggestion!

Let's try performing a power drain to reset the machine. Follow the steps below:

·         With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

·         Remove USB cable, or any other cables if present.

·         Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.

·         Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.

·         Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.

Now, before connecting any other cable make few copies with the ADF and check the functionality. Try making blank copies and see if that works.

Let me know if that helps!

Good luck 🙂

Thank you for the additional information. I cleaned the rollers and separator with bottled water as prescribed earlier. I then did as noted with unplugging the unit from its electric source and the unit along with the USB connection for 2-3 minutes. I then held the power button for about 30 seconds and replugged everything starting with direct current into the wall and not a protector or strip and then into the unit. NOTE: the unit came on automatically! Then I connected the USB and restarted the computer for good measure.

I scanned duplex using the ADF 160 images at a rate of four sets of 20 pages (40 images). I had to clean the glass after the 3rd set when I noticed a line. After the 4th set I prepared to scan my 5th set and it completed 14 pages (fronts only) and the scanner stopped with the 15th page stuck /not moving inside the ADF and the display on the unit showing "Now Scanning..." and the red "X" displayed. I can hear/click on the X but nothing happens. I can only turn the scanner off which when I do the 15th page gets pushed through but does not actually scan and the unit properly turns off.

Special NOTE: while the 15th page was stuck the 14th page that was scanned was showing half way in the scanner view window and then after about 1-2 minutes fully showed the full image.

This is doing exactly what it was doing previously and I was so hoping this was the solution by plugging it directly into the wall.

I looked at my Task Manager and though no activity is now done I have a total of 32,459 Mb of Physical Memory, 6,227 Cached, 29,348 Available and 23,578 Free.

Hopefully you can continue to provide another solution. I am grateful for both suggestions so far!

Hello, @Citsejamalak

Appreciate all your efforts 🙂

This does not look like any software related issue on your PC. This issue is completely on the printer hardware or with the printer firmware. As a last resort, let's try performing a complete factory reset on your printer.

I am sending you a private message to perform the reset on your printer. Please click on the mailbox icon at the top-right corner to access your inbox.

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance.

Cheers 🙂

Thank you very much for continued interaction re this issue! I really was hoping this would work. It definitely seemed to scan a bit more fluent. I got through 3 stacks of 20 (120 images) and began scanning the 4th stack. It got through the first side (all 20) and then as I flipped it for the opposite side it fed the first page and then paused out as previously described with the "Now Scanning" display on the unit.

NOTE: I do notice that there is a blinking blue internet light on my scanner unit display screen at the bottom right. I'm not sure if it was doing that prior to the reset but felt I should mention it.

I must also mention that toward the last 2-3 pages of the first side scanning of the 4th stack of 20 pages..., the speed /fluency of the scanning slowed down almost as though it was thinking /buffering /struggling to scan. I believe I mentioned before how it appears to be a memory issue and that there is an overstack somewhere that needs to be flushed out in order for it to continue.

I hope I am continuing to supply you with more information for anybody else who might be also able to chime in for a resolution- it is much appreciated!

PS. I am sure you are (all) aware that there is a software update that is "stuck" on the HP ftp site. It's 3.1mb and titled "HP Update Software Utility"

Also... when I turned the scanner back on that blue light is no longer blinking ....will try to continue scanning to see if there are any better results ...will keep you (all) posted and checking back for updates from you (all) as well.

Hello, @Citsejamalak

Much appreciate your efforts and your detailed description of the error!

First off, the blue light indicates the "Wireless" connection on the printer. If the light is blinking that specifies that the printer is not connected (since you reset the printer, that was expected) to the network and if the light is not blinking and is simply on, that indicates that the printer is connected to a wireless network.

About the multiple page scanning issue, I'm afraid that's all I got at the moment. If the issue is not a technical limitation of the product, then it could be a hardware defect on the machine. In that situation, I would suggest you contact the HP phone support. You can visit http://www.support.hp.com/contact-hp and fill in your product details to get the tech support number.

Hope that helps! Let me know!

Have a great day 🙂
