Who are"they" and what are you trying to do?

Printer model?

Operating System and version?

What have you tried?

Where are you seeing the error?

Which software are you using to "do whatever"?

 

A guess:

Yes, you can use Yahoo - that said, you cannot use Two-step verification and / or you have to have set an Apps Password (on your email side, not in the "scan" setup.

When the website support page opens, Select (as available) a Category > Topic > Subtopic

Indeed, you will get a Protocol Not Supported using your standard Yahoo password due to Yahoo Security settings.

 

You may generate a 3rd party app password and use it to connect the printer to Yahoo Mail:

Yes, protocol not supported is the exact error message for SMTP scanning to Yahoo, this should likely resolve the problem.
