HP OFFICEJET PRO 8500

A single vertical black line appears when scanning or printing on auto feed. I have seen several people post questions about how to get rid of the lines but no answers. Where are the answers? How can the printer be cleaned to rid of the black line?

Hi @egohme,

Good Day. A warm welcome to the HP community. I reviewed the case regarding issues with scanning and printing from the ADF. Superb description, brilliant troubleshooting and terrific observations made before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂 I will be delighted to assist you here.

For better clarity, and to assist you correctly, I would require more information regarding this:

  • Did this happen after a recent power outage or surge?
  • Did you make copies directly from the printer without any communication from the computer?

This issue could be hardware related. We need to isolate the issue first to be hardware or software related.

  • Please make 2 copies directly from the ADF without any communication from the computer and check if the black line appears in these copies.
  • If it does then follow all the prescribed steps to improve copy quality issues from this link: http://hp.care/2hG1D99 and check if it gets fixed.
  • Also try the prescribed steps from this link: http://hp.care/2wOzFua to improve print quality issues. Please check the diagnostics report. If the issue persists, then try changing the affected cartridge and check again.
  • If the issue still persists, then contact HP phone support to get the printer replaced.

HP Technical Support can be reached by clicking on the following link: http://hp.care/2r9wSvP

  • Once the support page opens please select the country in which you're located. Next, enter your HP model number on the right.
  • Next, choose the 'Contact Support' tab at the top and scroll down to the bottom of the 'HP Support- Contact' page to fill out the form provided with your contact information.
  • Once completed click the 'Show Options' icon on the bottom right.
  • Lastly, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select 'Get phone number.' A case number and phone number will now populate for you.

They will be happy to assist you immediately.

If the unit is under warranty, the manufacturer’s warranty should take care of it for you.

If it copies correctly without hassles then please follow these steps to uninstall and reinstall the printer software and this should fix the issue.

  • In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.
  • Select your HP printer.
  • Select Uninstall.
  • In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.
  • In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”
  • Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.
  • Type printui.exe /s and click OK.
  • Click on Drivers tab.
  • Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click Remove at the bottom.
  • Select OK.
  • Remove all instances of the same.
  • Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.
  • Close Devices and Printers.
  • Restart the PC again.

Then download the latest full feature driver from http://hp.care/2hG1GSn and install it on the computer after selecting the correct operating system.

Connect the printer to your computer only when the setup prompts for the printer.

This should fix it for you.

Please perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. The trick is to remain patient.Going by your technical expertise and competence I am sure you will be able to perform these steps without breaking a sweat. 🙂

Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes.

David, I unplugged the printer for a few minutes to reset it, plugged it back in but the single crisp and clear line was still there. I then followed your directions to clean the rollers and surfaces in the ADF gizmo. Now the ADF is putting out clean docs with no lines.

Thank you!
