Upgrade to IE and RDC ?
07-24-2012 11:24 AM

I have a thin client HP t5740 with Windows Embedded Standard. (WES , Atom cpu)
Is it possible to upgrade the 'built-in' IE 7 to IE 8 and to upgrade The Remote Desktop Connection to the latest version ?
IE 7 is in some respects outdated , and it is very 'inconvenient' to be regularly 'requested' to upgrade .
I have tried to download IE 8 from Microsoft's upgrade-site. But the t5740 will not accept the installation - the error-message reads something like this -
"The browser is not a 32-bit version" or something like that . And so the installation stops there.
What to do ? , is it at all possible to do these upgrades. If not , I will consider a thin clint to a very sorry replacement for a regular PC. And still thin clients are not all that inexpensive. They should be more 'flexible' .

The whole purpose of a thin client is security, it cannot be upgraded like a normal OS, HP however does upgrade the entire OS, which can be imaged to the thin cient, it requires some level of skill to properly upgrade with a new image.
Here is the new image that includes IE8 with other enhancements, but do some reading before you attempt upgrading, it is not an easy task for the non IT person.
This image contains the following items:
- An image that is entirely based on the Microsoft Windows Embedded Standard 2009 (WES2009) Operating System.
- HP Info Center v1.1 R41
- Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection v5.1.2600.6000.1 R6101 w/ RDP7
- Microsoft Media Player 11.0.5721.5268
- HP Monitors Support v20110518
- HP TeemTalk v 7.3.2.4792, R55
- VMware View Client 5.0.0.443491
- Microsoft .Net framework 3.5 SP1 v5.1.2600.6000.8, R6112
- HP Multimedia & USB Enhancements (MMR / USBR) v7.2 MR1, R13
- Citrix Receiver (Enterprise) v13.0.0.6685, R47
- Symantec Endpoint Protection v5.1.3978 R45 (Policy X3978.12711.01)
- HP RGS v5.4.7
- Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.18702
- HP Velocity v1.4.1R5138
- HP Device Manager Agent v4.4.13055
- HP ThinState Capture PE2.0 Version v6.12.0.5, R42
- HP EzTools (Hydra) - Connector Build 43, R52
- HP EzTools (Hydra) - Easy Config Build 47
.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Download the file by clicking the "Download" or "Obtain Software" button and
saving the file to a folder on your hard drive (make a note of the folder where
the downloaded file is saved).
2. Double-click the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions.
This SoftPaq contains a utility that is designed to aid in the deployment of
this factory image.
During the installation, you are prompted to choose one of the following
actions:
- Format a USB drive with the image and tools.
- Unpack the contents into a directory of your choice.
If you are not sure about how to proceed, or if you want to integrate this
image into a managed environment, choose "Deployment" and review the
documentation provided in the RECOVERY.PDF file.
NOTE: To determine the version of your operating system, click the Start
button, which is located in the lower-left corner of the display screen, and
then select HP System Information. In the System Information panel that is
displayed, check the value beside the Image Version label.

Thank you , Mumbodog
I will try your suggestion for upgrading my HP t5740 , when I return after my holiday.
I'll let you know , if I succeded ,
but for now , thank you
(Actually I managed to udgrade the RDC alone to ver. 7 by copying the file from a PC , where download was no problem . Maybe it was the file "mstsc - exe" , I copied - I'm not quite sure - but it worked.)

Hi Mumbodog
I have downloaded the OS-update-file that you suggested , to a folder 'of my creating' ,
the sp56100-exe , though , does not work .
I get an immediate error-message (screendump attached - eeeeeh attaching not possible here) .
For your information - I have had to disable Symantec in order to be allowed to download the -exe - file.
And I have NOT re-activated the firewall prior to my update-attempt.
"An error ( -5001 : 0x80070002) has occurred while running the setup.
and of course a reminder to close everything else - that I did of course.
Any suggestions ?

Trying to run the -exe-file from a memory-stick still gives me the same error-message :
"The image could not be "written" ,
I have disabled the 'HP Write Filter" , so that the lock-icon is red and 'open' on the proces-line.
And I have switched to be 'Administrator' .
What good is an update , if it cannot work in the actual device ?
MG , thin clients are not easy ,

Hi again Mumbodog
The whole installation problem seems to be lack of RAM space .
My t5740 SHOULD have 1 G of RAM , but in the RAM-Disk Manager the maximum 'available' RAM seems to be 96 MB .
The preset amount of RAM is 16 MB and via a 'glider' the amount can be expanded to max 96 MB , Why is the full amount of 1 GB not available ?? Or : how do I get around this ?
After expanding the RAM to 96 MB the installation actually started , but then , very soon after , a message told me that that the Z-drive was not big enough for the 'recovery' of -something (?) - , and then the installation stopped.
So how on earth do I get to exploit the full 1 GB of RAM , that this device has ?
Can the HP RAMDisk Manager be 'inactivated' ?
Sincerely Kel Heilmann
