Stream 8 5901 and 5909

I've decided to treat myself this season to a new toy.

Microsoft Store has a great price on the Stream 8 5909, but Amazon has an even better price on the Stream 8 5901.
I can't find any diffence on the HP spec pages, and most importantly, both offer 200MB/Month 4G Data with T-Mobile.
I don't want to end up with a non-US model that doesn't work with the GSM bands in the US.
What is the difference between the 5901 and 5909?

I gather from what I've read that the 59xx models require a mico-SIM, and that the T-Mobile data plan is free.
So, does it come with the micro-SIM, or do I have to acquire that - and what is the process and are there any  hidden fees?

Thanks.

HP Stream 8 5901 Product Specifications. - Has micro-SIM. Uses 4G HSPA+ with T-Mobile.

HP Stream 8 5909 Product Specifications. - Has micro-SIM. Uses 4G HSPA+ with T-Mobile.

HP Stream 8 5801 Product Specifications. - No SIM. Uses 4G HSPA+ with T-Mobile.

Stream 8 5901 and 5909

Hi,

Full specs 5901:

and 5909:

  http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04499621

Main difference: the 5909 has WWAN and the 5901 does not have.

Regards.

Uhm, if that's the case then HP is doing some SERIOUS false advertising.  WWAN is the cellular data aspect of the product, and this is available on both models.  You can't say it offers cellular data but doesn't offer WWAN - they're the same thing.  HP was apparently just a bit neglegent and forgot to explicitly specify that the 5901 does have WWAN in the specs - though the product description clearly indicates that it does have cellular abilities.

The real difference is that the MS store version (5909) does not contain any 3rd party software preinstalled.  Microsoft calls these versions a "signature edition," and they're only available without that 3rd party software if you get them from MS.

Hi,

No, I mentioned few times on this forum: HP re-uses many number codes, for example you can find same number for printers but they are totally different. In this case, HP has many products called Stream 8 5901, at least TWO as you can see from your link and my link one product is K4F55UA and other product is G4U87LA. Same as in laptops world, many people thought all Elitebook 840 G1's (for example)  are the same but they can get dozens of different products.

Regards.

So rather than answer the original poster's question, you just compared it to a completely different product than the one the OP was asking about?  The OP was asking about K4F55UA (and even provided a link), which clearly has WWAN or HP is falsely advertising the product.  You then pulled out G4U87LA and claimed the difference was that the 5901 doesn't have WWAN and the 5909 does.  The 5901 the OP was referencing (K4F55UA) does and had better have WWAN, since HP advertises it that way.

Stream 8 5901 and 5909

I'm still confused as to which to buy.
Sounds like "HP Stream 8" covers a lot of models that all may have similar specs but aren't the same - ugh!
So for $150 I can get a 5901 with bloat ware from Amazon, or $170 gets me a 5909 without bloatware from Microsoft.

Either way, I really like the 200MB/month of data from T-Mobile - hope there are no gotcha's.

Thanks.

MBryga,

Your last post sums up the differences between the models:  The 5909 is the Microsoft Signature Edition HP Stream 8 with no bloatware.  The 5901 is the HP Stream 8 is the version sold elsewhere (Amazon, BestBuy, HP, etc) that has bloatware.

Both have 4g wireless and the sim slot is unlocked so you can use the tablet with an AT&T sim card.  I have done this and it works.

I forgot to add that if it were me, I'd buy the cheaper one and remove the bloatware or any software/apps that you won't use.

Many times the experts that post here only read the specifications of the equipment asked about, they haven't actually handled or used the devices.

I'd be really careful with the cheapest one that's listed above.  It links to a model 5801 that sells for $30 less.  Though the specs sheet lists WWAN, I think that's just another mistake from HP (maybe they have the spec sheets backwards between the 5801 and the 5901).  The actual product discription for the 5801 makes no mention whatsoever of cellular capabilities or service, whereas that's the very first feature the 5901 brags about.  I think the price difference is actually because the 5801 does not have WWAN and the 5901 does.

What Amazon currently has on sale is listed as the 5901, so be sure you keep them separate and don't fall back to a 5801 somewhere else and think it's the same thing just because that spec sheet says it has WWAN.

Darrenc,

Not to confuse the issue, I was comparing the 5901 and 5909 HP Stream 8 tablets.  Both have 4g capability.  I did not mention the 5801 in my post.
