Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I cannot download pictures from my smart phone to my envy laptop either thru the USB cable or by the SD card.  I used to be able to view and download but after updates the laptop can't seem to find the phone or SD card.  Does anyone know what changed or was there an "IMPROVEMENT"?  Since it involves both USB AND SD card it don't see how it could be Google.  Does anyone know of a photo viewer that can replace Google photos on my phone?  I don't want to crop, edit, make a movie etc, I just want to view and save photos from my trail camera and phone and I am frustrated that I cannot do that.  Some help please.
