I own a dv6144 with XP. I was wondering if I could install 64 bit version of 7 or vista. Should I try to install windows 7 or it will be painful?

This thread has been a GREAT tool for all of us that are or were trying to upgrade to windows 7.Thanks to those that contribute.

 

One could search for my posts to see where I've been with my DV9720, it's been a labor of love (yeah right, LOL).

 

One of the biggest (most dificult) issues to solve has been the Audio. I recently had the motherboard fixed by a company in "Florida" that specializes in mobo repair. Turns out I fried the Nvidia chip. (will be more vigilent to NOT block the vents with my leg). The silver lining to this cloud is, I seem to have gotten my DVD player back, and can boot from it. So I decided to do the HP recovery from the disks I bought a year ago. It went OK, but took all night, like 8-10 hrs. Then I started test all the hardware and found the built in mic did not work and I could not get web pages to load (was connected to the internet) even Comcast phone support could not get it to work. Got fed up with Vista quite quickly (it's very slow, and hard to use).

 

So, my next move was to do a clean install of Win7 64bit from the install disk. In an hour and 20 minutes I was fully installed and on the internet. The hardware seems to work well with the exception of internal mic. Still working on that.

In the process of working on the built-in mic AND letting windows update do it's thing, I lost my audio. The Conexant HD smartaudio 221 does NOT seen to work on this unit with windows7. The driver that was installed by the Windows7 disk was a signed "High Definition Audio Device" driver, worked well but no internal mic, external works fine.

 

No matter what I did, I could not get back to working speakers. I tried at least a dozen drivers from HP and different sources.

 

Here is how I got back to working.

 

I uninstalled the sound driver from "Device Manager" as well as the Modems driver. (I think they are "tied" together. Then I uninstalled the Conexant drivers from the "Programs" uninstall section. Before rebooting I turned off the automatic update feature, because it kept installing Conexant drivers that don't work. When I rebooted, windows 7 installed the "High Definition Audio Device" driver as well as the matching Modem driver.

 

Is there some way to LOCK the working driver, or do I just have to screen my updates?

BTW, I did a bios upgrade to F32 last year. from Win7 I believe. And if windows upate is left to itself, it will find all the drivers except for the Richoh card reader, I think it took a few update "cycles".

I get decent scores from the performance rating, except for graphics (3.6) This laptop likes Windows7

2) OK Daniel I'll try and get a video done.  Set up HWMonitor, and I'll get some screen dumps done soon.

Don't know much about the model, but if it was available with Vista from HP, and has a 64 bit processor, I would do a back up and creat a restore disk before trying.  The few installs I have done with 7 have been a breeze compared to XP or Vista (by miles and hours). LOL

I have just finished the 7 installation.

Everything is fine but I am not sure if I should leave aero enabled or not? My relative score is 3.5 and 3.2 for 3g graphics.

I'm working on a dv6745us upgraded to Windows 7.  According to HP's list of supported notebooks, Windows 7 drivers are available for this model.

 

But when I view the drivers page, it doesn't show any Windows 7 drivers.  I'm specifically looking for the webcam driver.

 

Right now, the webcam isn't even showing up in Device Manager. There is an unidentified USB device, which I suspect is the webcam.  Under device status, it says, "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"

 

Any suggestions?

Code 43 informs that you've got hardware problem with one of device.

If only webcam is not working / not detected then this is for sure problem with it.

Only service may fix this. It's not so big problem you may always buy external webcam.
