Double-side Paper Source Problem

My wired LAN-attached HP LaserJet 400 M401dne printer will not print MS Word documents on both sides.  When Print on both sides is requested in Print Settings the printer warning light flashes and it displays, “Load Tray 1. Plain, Letter, Or Press [OK] to use available media”.  When [OK] is pressed, two one-sided pages are printed.  This behavior is the same with each of the five possible values for Paper source in Printer Properties.  This same behavior is also invoked when trying to print tables, although the margins are way off.  Single sided printing works normally.  Double sided printing works in Excel.

I am using the current drivers, and current versions of Office 354 and Windows 10.  Removing the printer from the computer and reinstalling it had no effect.  Also, attaching the printer to a another identically configured HP computer with the same software produces the same problem behavior.  Prior to some number of automatic updates of Windows 10, this printer was able to print double-sided.

There is also an HP  Officejet Pro 8630 on the same network which seems to be working properly.
