HP 500GB SimpleSave Portable Backup Drive
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have an HP 500GB SimpleSave Portable Backup Drive (serial no. [edit] that I bought back in 2010.  My external hard drive has been working fine until the plug that my USB cord connects to broke off the SATA-USB adapter inside the enclosure.  Therefore, I had to remove the hard drive from the enclosure, and removed the adapter from the hard drive.

I bought a Thermaltake SATA to USB adapter in order to retrieve the data from my hard drive.  When I connected the hard drive to my computer, I did get a sound that indicated that a connection was made.  However, when I go to the Disk management screen, I see that there is a presence, but it says "no media".  When I go to the Device manager, and go under "disk drives",  I see "ASMT 2105 USB Device".  I tried connecting the hard drive to several USB ports and using 2 computers, and get the same result.

I am certain that the hard drive is still working.  Is there a way I can retrieve the data from this hard drive without having to send it to data recovery?  Please help.

Hi

Try Piriform Recuva first.

OR

Change the OS and that may make a difference.

Download and make a USB flash drive of https://lubuntu.net/ ;  then boot from the USB (it does not install to the actual drive) and try the File Manager.

I tried the Recuva, but because the computer doesn't recognize the drive, it doesn't work.  As far as attempting to boot with lubuntu.net, it failed when I tried to boot.  I know there has to be another option.
