Tablet went back to hp, they couldn't find a fault. Replaced the card reader and sent it back.
The issue never went away. In the end I sold the tablet and moved on

So update, I had HP take my 1012 G1 again, and they confirmed that it was the MicroSD slot at fault.
They replaced it. My unit was still within warranty, so they replaced it for free. Everything fully works.
Just heads up for those who still have the issue. It's fixable!
