Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Yesterday I could not print a job from my PC (this happens too frequently).  I turned the printer off at its switch and waited a few seconds.  When I turned it back on I could not print anything.  The screen is showing the message Verifying and it has not gone away for hours.  I cannot turn the printer off at its switch, it is not responding.  I unplugged it to see if Verifying would go away.  After reconnecting it the message is still showing.  What can I do to get the printer back in operating mode?
