Elitebook 860 G10, when plugged into my HP USB-C G5 docking station, it will sometimes drop all connections and power through the dock.  It basically appears the docking station turns off and everything reverts back to one screen.  If I remove the USB-C cord and plug into another USB-C port, the connections are re-established and I can continue working as normal.  Randomly this happens once or twice a day.

Hello.

The USB-C Dock G5 download page has the latest firmware 1.0.18.0 which has a fix that sounds VERY promising:

"Fixes an issue where the USB and DisplayPort functions are lost when the dock is connected to the host."

If this is the "USB-C G5 Essential" dock, the latest firmware 01.00.09.00 for it has a similar fix:

"Fixes an issue which causes display and USB instability on G10 devices."

I recommend also upgrading the laptop BIOS while you are at it. BIOS and the Essential dock firmware can be both found on the 860 G10 download page, but for some reason the latest USB-C Dock G5 firmware on that page is not the latest. ☹️

Also, make sure you are using the power supply provided with the dock.

We have also run into where the docking station and laptop disconnect.  We have updated FW of dock and BIOS of laptop.  We even installed BIOS version 01.09.00 that has since been pulled off HP website.   We have seen this with the Elitebook 860 G9/G10 models.  I created Case with HP and ran ImageDiags.exe on multiple devices. They asked for large zip files and referenced FTP site to upload but never gave me address to upload.  I have replied 4 times now asking where to upload.  Getting frustrated as this is happening often with these models.

Product Name = HP EliteBook 860 16 inch G9 Notebook PC
BIOS Version = U71 Ver. 01.08.01

HP USB-C Dock G5 = Firmware Version 1.0.18.0

Hi @greggmichalski

It's HPRC where you probably need to upload the zip files >> https://ftp.usa.hp.com/hprc/

First, try to power reset your HP commercial computer by pressing and holding the power button for approximately 15 seconds or even 30 seconds.

Here are details >> https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_1997208-1551050-16

Then,

If you have the classic USB-C G5 dock, please download and install all these 3 - 4:

RealTek LAN network driver 10.59 (Win 10)

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp149001-149500/sp149176.exe

or
RealTek LAN network driver 1153 (Win 11)

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp147501-148000/sp147792.exe

USB-C Dock G5 firmware 1.0.18.0

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp146001-146500/sp146273.exe

Audio driver 6.3.9600.205
https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp96501-97000/sp96688.exe

Just for the records... if you have the newer USB-C Essential G5 dock, please download and install all these 4:

RealTek LAN network driver 10.59
https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp149001-149500/sp149176.exe

or
RealTek LAN network driver 1153 (Win 11)

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp147501-148000/sp147792.exe

USB-C Essential Dock G5 firmware 01.00.09.00

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp149501-150000/sp149576.exe

Audio driver 6.3.9600.2337

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp143501-144000/sp143914.exe

Audio firmware 03.05.00

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp143501-144000/sp143916.exe

Reboot the computer when all the installation completes.

If the dock drop continues, the dock must be connected/cable plugged in . Go to Start button -> Device Manager -> Network adapters -> right click on the Realtek -> Properties

In the driver properties, in the "Advanced" tab - find and set to DISABLE

  • Selective suspend
  • Idle power savings
  • Energy-Efficient Ethernet

Apply / Save / Close.

For Windows 11 (extra), to to the "Power Management" tab and uncheck the option to allow the computer to turn off the device. Apply / Save / Close.

Unplug/plug/Reconnect or Restart the PC ...and you should be good then.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply.  You were correct on the HP FTP site.  They sent that and login info.  I will continue to work with them but thanks for the reminder on Power Management options as that setting has hurt us in the past for other devices.
