http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware/G71-340US-failed-HDD-3yr-warranty-from-Samsung-but-1y...

3 months following the expiration of my original warranty on this unit, the HDD failed.  I'm unsure what caused the failure as the laptop has remained in the same location for nearly 7 months and has neither been moved or otherwise touched beyond that of normal use.  Never the less, the drive is dead.  My question is related to the warranty situation.  When I call Samsung with the part number and serial number of the drive they tell me the warranty is supported by HP (this I know).  When I ask what the warranty would be if I purchased a replacement drive of the same model from Samsung directly, the answer was 3 years.  I then ask the representative why the warranty is decreased from 3 years to 1 year when the drive is connected to an HP laptop.  The rep answers by stating she has no idea.

The reason I ask is this... If an OEM drive of the same manufacturer and model comes with a 3 year warranty out of the box, why is the warranty only 1 year from HP for the same unit?  I understand the entire system is covered by the 1 year warranty but I see no reason why the drive's original warranty is void as the result of using it with a HP system.

Can anyone explain this to me.  I've owned nothing but HP systems in the past and luckily have never had a catastrophic failure such as this.  However, the fact that HP won't cover the drive, especially given the fact that Samsung will replace it for them for FREE... forces me to rethink my decision to buy HP products in the future.

Thanks for helping out!

Peace!

Although I am an HP employee, I am speaking for myself and not for Hewlett-Packard.
