If the laptop has built in media reader, just remove the card from the camera and place it in the reader. The OS should recognize that a media card has been inserted and give a choice for any actions. If the laptop does not have a media slot for the type card of the camera, then buy an external media card reader that plugs into a USB port and proceed that way.

My gateway laptop has a built in SD card reader running windows xp media center but it has never been able to read or recognize SD cards in windows no matter what I do. It does work with linux so it is a software or driver problem with windows. If you are in doubt about your hardware before you buy new hardware try a linux live cd or run ubuntu off a flash drive and see if it works.

Many cameras have an extra cord to allow plugging the camera into a USB port. Does the subject camera have one? Use that to see if the card can be read that way. Most often the camera has to be turned on for this to work.

Hello knoxlab,
Your computer will not read your SD cards after you performed a recovery on your laptop.
Go into device manager and uninstall the card reader, it should be listed as IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.
This will uninstall and reinstall the driver for the card reader.
Here is a link to device manager.
Clicking the White Kudos star on the left is a way to say Thanks!
Let me know how everything goes.
Have a good day.
